Dennis Farina: Remembering Chicago's blue-collar star

In 1978, director Michael Mann returned to his native Chicago to scout locations and conduct research for a film called “Thief.” One of the local Chicago Police Department advisors hired to work on the tale of cops, robbers and the gray areas in between was Dennis Farina, of the burglary division. Mann liked him right away. He liked him enough to put him in the movie, in a tiny role, as somebody’s henchman. Westwood up 2; Tiger, others in hunt

GULLANE, Scotland -- Nobody expected it to take this long, certainly not him. Through scandal, scorn, injury and athletic redemption, Tiger Woods has re-emerged as the No. 1 player in the game, with only a major championship keeping him from a full return to glory. That is now within his grasp at the game's oldest tournament, a 15th major championship one day away in the land of golf's birth. Woods has not been this close through 54 holes of a major since his life imploded nearly four years ago. An excellent opportunity awaits Sunday at Muirfield. But he will have to chase down third-round leader Lee Westwood, whose own journey to major glory has been longer and far more painful. And he'll have to hold off those around him, including Hunter Mahan, who along with Woods -- and recently Westwood -- employs Sean Foley as coach. Actress Rae Dawn Chong uses racial slur to rip former co-star Oprah Winfrey

Rae Dawn Chong co-starred with Oprah Winfrey in "The Color Purple," and said the two were friends on set. But in a crude radio interview on Thursday filled with expletives and a racial slur, she said that soon changed. Appearing on Matty P’s Radio Happy Hour for a segment later published on TMZ, Chong said Winfrey was "lovely" on the film, but became jealous when Chong got a part on Arnold Schwarzenegger's action flick "Commando.” “That’s when she was a total biotch,” Chong said. "I starred in ‘Commando.’ And she just wasn’t having me. She’s competitive. She didn’t like me."

The Ninth Circle of Law Enforcement

Committed genre fans endure enormous amounts of recycled garbage in hopes of seeing something, anything, new. Even the most forgiving have their limits, though, and this week’s multiplex terminus can be found in the noisy nonsense known as “R.I.P.D.” Based on “Rest in Peace Department,” a Dark Horse comic created by Peter M. Lenkov, the movie has the kind of clever-enough premise that could be easily pitched at a 60-second meeting: a heavenly police force hunts dead villains and sends them to hell. Written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the movie was directed by Robert Schwentke, who made a promising thriller (“Flightplan”) a few years back.

Comic Con Costumes 2013: Taking San Diego By Storm

It's July in San Diego and that only means one thing: COMIC CON. Swarms of comic book-loving Americans take to the streets to celebrate the culture of anime, science fiction, fantasy and everything in between. The nerds are representing in full force -- their boots are laced, their gloves are on, and in some cases, their fangs are out. But the west coast's annual nerd prom is not as niche as it used to be. Every year, Comic Con gets bigger, and more and more of Hollywood hits the road each summer to partake in four days of panels, screenings, autographs and interviews. We're talking "The Hunger Games," Harrison Ford, an "X-Files" reunion and even Metallica Day! But one facet of Comic Con reigns supreme year after year: the art of the costume. It's Halloween on steroids and we just can't tear our eyes away.

The Conjuring: A Dull Lesson in the Horrors of 'Based on a True Story'

The Conjuring is a fairly standard-issue Hollywood horror possession film. There's a dog that does the usual thing dogs do in horror films. There's a doll that does what dolls usually do in horror films. There's some eerie TV static, some doors banging, some ghost hunters with motion detectors and UV lights, and some creepy ghosts who appear on cue when you expect to least expect them, complete with ominous music and the spooky makeup that all ghosts wear so you can identify them. And there's an eerie whispered catch phrase, because the supernatural loves memes (in this case it's "look what you made me do.") 'Conjuring' Director James Wan on the Legacy of 'Saw,' Plans for 'Fast and Furious 7'

As the creator of the Saw franchise, director James Wan ushered in an entirely new genre of stunningly violent horrors films that detractors (and even many fans) dubbed "torture porn." So it's no small surprise that his new movie The Conjuring – an Amityville Horror-style movie about a family battling a haunted house in the Seventies – is virtually gore-free. Like Wan's last film, Insidious, the film creates crazy levels of suspense from the first frame and doesn't let up until the credits roll. We spoke with Wan about The Conjuring, shagging off his Saw baggage, his favorite horror flicks and his plans for the seventh Fast and Furious movie.

Obama's mistake on Trayvon Martin case

Editor's note: Abigail Thernstrom is the vice chairwoman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and an adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. She is the author, most recently, of "Voting Rights -- and Wrongs: The Elusive Quest for Racially Fair Elections." (CNN) -- Every American can make their own judgment about whether justice was served by the verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial but one thing we should all recognize: President Obama's interference in a local law enforcement matter was unprecedented and inappropriate, and he comes away from the case looking badly tarnished by his poor judgment. "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," the president said when asked about the case in the Rose Garden on March 23, 2012, after many had called for Zimmerman's arrest but several weeks before he was charged. "When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids." Read more here: http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/15/opinion/thernstrom-trayvon-martin-obama/index.html

Bryce Harper second to Yoenis Cespedes in 2013 MLB Home Run Derby

NEW YORK — It was always him and his dad. That’s how Bryce Harper remembers it. He would wait for Ron Harper to come home from his shift as an ironworker, a 5-year-old bundle of energy pleading for a pitcher. Out they would head, either into the family garage or to one of the dusty Las Vegas diamonds near their home. “I’d just swing and try to hit the ball as hard as I could,” the son recalled.

Talia Castellano, YouTube makeup star, dies at 13

Talia Castellano proudly sported a bald head after losing her hair as a result of chemotherapy, choosing to experiment with make-up instead to boost her self-confidence.
Castellano, who died Tuesday at age 13, was affectionately called a “professional, YouTube Makeup Guru.” She began to experiment with makeup after cancer treatment claimed her hair. She posted makeup tutorials on YouTube, garnering more than 8 million views for one video and more than 750,000 followers for her channel.
The teenage makeup artist dreamed of meeting talk show host and CoverGirl, Ellen DeGeneres, and doing her makeup. And when DeGeneres had Castellano on her show in September 2012 she got to do not only that, but was also named an “honorary CoverGirl” herself.

'Bomber' cover issue could be boon for Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone may end up proving that there's no such thing as bad publicity.
The magazine likely won't be hurt by the social media firestorm and subsequent boycott over putting one of the alleged Boston bombers on the front cover. On the contrary, it could even see a boost, experts said on Thursday.
"It may be seen as a bad decision to put a criminal or a killer on the cover, but Rolling Stone took a gamble," said Samir Husni, director of the magazine innovation center at the University of Mississippi. "In the long-term this is not going to hurt them.
The reason? Most of the magazine's 1.46 million circulation comes from subscriptions.

British Open leaderboard 2013: Jordan Spieth rolls in 7 straight pars, Tiger Woods starts steady

The second round of the 2013 British Open is underway, and there has been no early morning birdie run like we witnessed on Thursday with Miguel Angel Jimenez. Darren Clarke, the 2011 Open Champion, has made the biggest move so far with three birdies in his first five holes to get to 2-under for the Championship. Clarke has not done much on either the PGA or European Tour since his career-definining win at Royal St. George's two years ago, but his track record and familiarity with the links-style courses on The Open rota always make him a threat. Much like a Tom Lehman or Mark O'Meara, Clarke's comfort at this major and the firm and fast conditions can even out the age disadvantage he has at the start of the week.
On the opposite end of the age spectrum is Jordan Spieth, who started the day three shots back of leader Zach Johnson. The conventional wisdom is that the earliest morning tee times have the edge, with a course that's not as dried out and quick and with greens that are fresh. Spieth is already through his first seven holes, which he's started with seven steady pars. The 19-year-old has already stated he's far surpassed any goals and expectations he set for himself this season, but coming off last week's win at the John Deere, this is truly an incredible performance and could be a harbinger of the great things to come from the Dallas native. Spieth has made just one bogey through his first 25 holes at a Muirfield course where huge numbers are threatening on almost every tee.

School meals tainted with poison kill 22 children in Indian village

At least 22 schoolchildren died in northeastern India after eating free school lunches that contained a poison, a state official said.
More than 25 others were hospitalized in Bihar state, said Bihar Education Minister P.K. Shahi, after ingesting an insecticide that was in the food. One remains critical, the hospital said.
The poison was organophosphorus, a chemical that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is commonly used in agriculture.
It is a nerve agent related to sarin gas, which is used in chemical warfare, the U.S. Health Department says.
Exposure to a high dose can cause an irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, paralysis and seizures.
Shahi told CNN the school's cook had questioned the quality of the oil she was being asked to use but was overruled by the head teacher.
He said: "The information which has come to me indeed suggests that the headmistress was told by the cook that medium of cooking was not proper, and she suspected the quality of the oil. But the headmistress rebuked her, and chastised the children, and forced them to continue the meal."

Detroit files for bankruptcy protection

DETROIT -- The city of Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in federal court Thursday, laying the groundwork for a historic effort to bail out a city that is sinking under billions of dollars in debt and decades of mismanagement, population flight and loss of tax revenue.
The bankruptcy filing makes Detroit the largest city in U.S. history to do so.
The filing begins a 30- to 90-day period that will determine whether the city is eligible for Chapter 9 protection and define how many claimants might compete for the limited settlement resources that Detroit has to offer. The bankruptcy petition would seek protection from creditors and unions who are renegotiating $18.5 billion in debt and other liabilities.

Emmy nominations - 'House of Cards' joins list of Emmy nominees

House of Cards , the political thriller starring Kevin Spacey and streamed on Netflix, joined last year's incumbents Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Mad Men as Emmy nominees for best drama series.
Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Girls, Louie, Veep and the departed 30 Rock were named best-comedy contenders.
NOMINEES LIST: See which shows and stars made the cut
BIANCO: Fresh breeze blows through Emmys
This marks the first time that shows not aired on traditional broadcast or cable networks were nominated in the top Emmy categories, something of a watershed moment for the awards, which in a 2008 rule change made shows distributed over the Internet eligible for TV's top honors. Arrested Development's Jason Bateman, also on Netflix, and Cards' Spacey and Robin Wright won nominations as lead actors.
"We are thrilled beyond belief," says Netflix's Ted Sarandos, who was behind its original-series push and considers the Emmy nods "a leveling moment. Change comes very slow, but Emmy voters recognized that great television is great television, and they didn't pay attention to how it got there."
Netflix, which has veered from a DVD-by-mail service to a streaming giant with 29 million U.S. subscribers, has moved heavily into original series this year, with budgets matching those for traditional networks, and far exceeding those for most other web content.
Spacey, who plays conniving congressman Francis Underwood, joined Jeff Daniels, the embattled anchor in HBO's The Newsroom, along with repeat nominees Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Damian Lewis (Homeland). Wright will face off against Homeland's Claire Danes, Nashville's Connie Britton, Downton's Michelle Dockery, Bates Motel's Vera Farmiga, Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss and Scandal's Kerry Washington.
In the comedy field, Bateman (whose Emmy-winning show was canceled by Fox in 2006 but resurrected online in May), joined familar faces Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Louis C.K. (Louie), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory). Among actresses, Laura Dern, the star of HBO's canceled series Enlightened, joined Girls' Lena Dunham, Nurse Jackie's Edie Falco, 30 Rock's Tina Fey, Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus — last year's winner — and Parks and Recreation's Amy Poehler. Last year's nominees Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) and Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly) didn't make the cut. Neither did last year's winners Jon Cryer (lead actor for Two and a Half Men) and supporting actor Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family). As tough as the course is playing, he should still be in contact with the leaders by the end of the day.

No. 18, 470 yards, par 4: The brutal closing hole ... Woods with an iron is in the fairway but well back; he'll have a long second shot. McDowell, too, finds the fairway. From 218, Woods knocks it on the green and will have a pretty good look at birdie. Would be a good way to finish a round that was mostly a grind. McDowell finishes with a par and ends up with a 71 to stat at +4 for the tournament. Woods' birdie putt, from about 10 feet, goes down, so Woods closes with a birdie at 18 and gets back to 2 under for the day after an even par round of 71.
No. 17, 575 yards, par 5: Was a scoring hole Thursday, but it's playing into the wind Friday. Both Woods and McDowell could really use a birdie. Woods with his 3-metal smacks it into the middle of the fairway ... but reaching in two will be difficult, even from there. The hole is playing 100 yards longer (at least), thanks the wind shift, than it did in Round 1. Woods rifles a fairway metal at the green (from 318) and it stops in a swale in the fairway short of the green. He'll have a wedge is in hand, trying to get it close. Into the wind, Woods knocks it onto the green but not far enough back. Long birdie putt. At this point, Woods better get in par-par. Woods leaves his birdie putt inches short and taps in for par. Woods stays at -1; McDowell also makes par and is at +4.
No. 16, 186 yards, par 3: This par-3 is playing into the wind for the first time this week, and Woods finds the green — screaming "Bite! Bite!" all the way. It does, on the upper tier of the green but a difficult birdie putt. Good speed down the slope and a foot for par. There has been but one birdie at 16 so far. Woods didn't add to that total. Woods stays -1.
No. 15, 448 yards, par 4: Woods, again with an iron, smacks it dead center and gets a solid roll. McDowell also finds the fairway and gets a good roll. McDowell from 174 yards knocks it up and runs it past and into a bunker. Woods' shot hits hard and rolls over the green. Woods chips it up to about 5 feet. Another one of those testers for par. McDowell hits a beauty from the bunker. Pars for both ... and perhaps missed opportunities ... irons off the tee, wedges from the fairway and both had to scramble for par. Woods stays at -1, McDowell at +4.
No. 14, 475 yards, par 4: Woods' tee shot with a long iron is true but lands soft and gets no roll. He'll have a long second. McDowell's tee shot finds rough. Woods, from 227, lands it lovely on the green ... and then it rolls off the back and keeps rolling. His third is pretty good from where he is and he will have a good chance to save par. McDowell's 50-footer up the hill comes up just under 4 feet short. McDowell raps the par putt, and it hits the hole, goes 1/3 of the way down and spins out. Bogey 5. He will drop back to +4. Woods has 2 feet for his par saver. Woods stays at -1.
No. 13, 190 yards, par 3: Woods' 5-iron is true and finds the green. McDowell with a 4-iron ... drives it low and just past the hole at the back of the green. On Thursday, the club of choice on this hole was a 7-iron ... it was downwind and the ball was rolling on the green. Two birdie putts upcoming. Woods comes up short with his 35-foot birdie putt but calmly knocks in the par putt. McDowell's downhill left-to-righter goes down for birdie, and he is back to -3.
No. 12, 379 yards, par 4: The greens were watered Thursday night, so they are not quite as fiery ... but the wind has changed directions. Woods with an iron off the is safely in the fairway and away from the bunker at 260 yards. Woods' second. The birdie putt is up the hill but over a ridge ... his speed is off, short by a couple of inches. A par to stay at -1. McDowell also makes par to stay at +4.
